“We conclude that acupuncture was efficient to attenuate the psychological distress…”
In a 2010 study published in the journal Neuroscience Letters, researchers looked at the effect of acupuncture on psychological distress, including depression, anxiety and stress. Researchers measured patient-reported anxiety levels before and after treatments. They also cultured blood cells from the patients to measure the density of T-cells, a type of white blood cell related to immune function and healing, before and after treatments. Patients’ anxiety scores were significantly lower after the acupuncture treatments, and the proliferation of T-cells increased after the treatments.
Acupuncture treatment improves the heart rate variability, which improves the health and mental condition of the patient. This brings a balance to the nervous system. It also improves energy levels, and low energy levels have a direct link to stress and anxiety.
Another reason why acupuncture relieves stress and anxiety is because it is relaxing. The treatment itself is calming because the patient lays still, and the needles are in pressure points. Many times, patients fall asleep during the treatment.

Research published in 2004 in the Journal of Neuropsychiatry and Clinical Neuroscience looked at the effect of acupuncture on patients with insomnia related to anxiety.
The study showed acupuncture can increase your body’s overnight secretion of melatonin, a hormone strongly tied to your circadian rhythm or internal clock. The research also showed the acupuncture helped people fall asleep faster, reach deeper sleep and sleep longer. Each of the patients presented with anxiety tied to their insomnia, and the acupuncture also proved to reduce their anxiety.
The first group showed a significant reduction in the number of migraines they experienced compared with members of the other two groups. Researchers also conducted follow-up interviews with all participants six months after the treatments and found the frequency of migraines, the number of days people had a migraine and the intensity of the pain of those migraines were significantly lower for the group that had true acupuncture treatments.
